Meet in a public place
Choose well-lit parking lots, bank branch locations, or busy commercial areas. Avoid residential streets or isolated locations.
Meet during daylight hours
Schedule test drives and inspections between 10 AM - 4 PM when it's easier to see vehicle condition and there are more people around.
Bring someone with you
Never go alone. Bring a friend or family member to inspect the car and provide a second opinion.
Share your location
Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back. Share live location on your phone during the meetup.
Verify the seller's identity
Check that the seller's ID matches the name on the title. If they can't produce the title or their name doesn't match, walk away.
Trust your instincts
If something feels off, leave. No car is worth your safety.
Inspection Checklist
- Check the VIN on the dashboard matches the VIN on the title and listing
- Inspect body panels for mismatched paint, gaps, or signs of accident repair
- Test all lights, turn signals, wipers, windows, locks, and climate controls
- Check for fluid leaks under the car (oil, coolant, transmission fluid)
- Examine tire tread depth and check for uneven wear
- Test drive on highway and city streets—listen for unusual noises
- Test brakes at various speeds and check for vibrations or pulling
- Check engine warning lights—ask for maintenance records
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic ($100-150)
Scam Prevention Tips
Never wire money or send payment before seeing the car
Scammers request deposits via wire transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Real sellers accept cash or certified check at time of pickup.
Avoid "too good to be true" prices
If a car is priced far below market value, it's likely a scam or has undisclosed issues. Research comparable vehicles before committing.
Beware of shipping or delivery scams
Scammers claim to offer shipping or can't meet in person. Always inspect the car yourself before paying.
Verify title authenticity
Check for watermarks, state seals, and security features. Fake titles are red flags for stolen vehicles.
Don't share sensitive information
Never give out your SSN, bank account details, or passwords. Legitimate buyers don't need this information.
Report suspicious listings

Title Transfer Checklist
- Verify the seller's name on the title matches their ID
- Ensure there are no liens listed on the title
- Have the seller sign and date the title in your presence
- Fill in the odometer reading and sale price accurately
- Get a bill of sale with both signatures for your records
- Submit title transfer to your state DMV within 10-30 days
