How to Accept Payment When Selling a Car Privately

Educational guide on payment methods when selling a car. How to handle cash, cashier's checks, bank wire transfers, and digital payment methods.

Payment Considerations in a Private Car Sale

Collecting payment is a critical step of a private vehicle sale. Torque does not process vehicle payments or hold escrow funds; buyers and sellers are responsible for agreeing on a payment method that works for both parties.

Understanding the operational steps and risk factors of each payment option helps ensure a smooth, informed transaction before transferring ownership.

Meeting at a Bank Branch

Many buyers and sellers choose to complete vehicle transactions directly inside a local bank branch. Closing inside a bank branch offers practical conveniences:

  • Direct Teller Verification: Bank staff verify funds, detect counterfeit bills, and issue official instruments in real time.
  • Security and Surveillance: Bank lobbies are high-security environments equipped with HD surveillance cameras and armed security personnel.
  • Notary Services: Many banks have on-staff public notaries who can notarize your Bill of Sale and Title Assignment certificates free of charge.
  • Immediate Deposit: You never have to walk down the street or drive home carrying thousands of dollars in cash.

Evaluating Payment Methods: Safe vs. Dangerous

Payment Method Safety Rating Risk Level & Verdict
Bank-Issued Cashier's Check SAFE (If Witnessed at Branch) Safe ONLY if you watch the teller issue it inside the buyer's bank branch or have your teller verify it directly.
Cash in Bank Lobby SAFE Completely irreversible once counted and deposited by a teller. Bring a counterfeit detector pen if counting outside a bank.
Direct Bank Wire (Fedwire) SAFE Bank wire transfers are irreversible once cleared into your account. Do not confuse wires with reversible ACH transfers.
Cashier's Check (In Parking Lot) HIGH RISK Counterfeit cashier's checks look 100% authentic. Your bank may make funds available within 24 hours, but the check will bounce 5 to 7 days later.
Peer-to-Peer Apps (Zelle, Venmo, Cash App) HIGH RISK Accounts can be funded via stolen credit cards. When the real account holder reports fraud, the app clawbacks all funds from your account.
Personal / Business Checks DO NOT ACCEPT High probability of insufficient funds, stop-payment orders, or closed accounts. Never accept personal checks for a car sale.

The Cashier's Check Trap Explained

The most pervasive vehicle payment scam involves fake cashier's checks. Under the federal Expedited Funds Availability Act, banks are legally mandated to make funds from a deposited cashier's check available to the account holder within 1 to 2 business days. Many sellers mistake "funds available" for "the check has permanently cleared."

In reality, routing a check back to the issuing bank for final clearance can take 5 to 10 business days. When the check is discovered as fraudulent, your bank will automatically reverse the entire deposit, pull the money out of your account, and hold you liable for any overdrafts. Meanwhile, the scammer has disappeared with your car and title.

The Fix: Only accept a cashier's check if you physically accompany the buyer into their issuing bank branch to watch the teller draw the check from their account, or if your bank's loss-prevention department calls the issuing bank's official phone number to authenticate the check serial number before you endorse the title.

The Non-Negotiable Closing Sequence

Follow this exact chronological sequence during closing:

  1. Step 1: Verify & Secure Funds First: Receive cash and watch the teller deposit it, or verify the cashier's check with bank management. Ensure the funds are irrevocably in your account.
  2. Step 2: Sign the Bill of Sale: Both parties sign two copies of the Bill of Sale and Odometer Disclosure statement.
  3. Step 3: Endorse Title Certificate: Sign and date the title assignment lines in clean ink. Fill in the buyer's legal name and sale price.
  4. Step 4: Remove Your License Plates: Unbolt your front and rear plates from the car. Retain them for surrender or transfer.
  5. Step 5: Hand Over Keys & Manuals: Hand over all key fobs, valet keys, wheel lock keys, and owner's manuals. The transaction is complete.
